Round 9 – 2013 Sho-Me State Pitbike Series – Hwy 65 MX

036October 28, 2013 – St. Louis, MO:

Round 9 of the Sho-Me State Pit Bike Series, the final race of the season, was held at Hwy65mx in Sedalia, MO. Coincidently this was also the final race ever at this facility as the track had been sold and was closing the following week.

Pit Bike Junkie Magazine co-founders, “Fantasy” Jim & James “Professor” Smoot had already won the track championship titles at Midway Speedway (5 rounds of racing) and the Professor had locked in the State Championship 12” Amateur title the previous weekend at Round 8 at Riverbottom MX in Osage Beach, MO.

“Fantasy” Jim had moved into the series lead in the Vet class when his #1 rival Doug “Nick Novice” Scrounce was a no show at Riverbottom, but it would take one more race to determine the State Champion Vet title. When Scrounce was once again a no show for the final race, “Fantasy” Jim, the world’s oldest pit bike racer would win the State Championship title before he even started his engine.

“With the pressure off it was time to just go out and have some fun” said “Fantasy” Jim who would finish the day with a 2nd overall and claim two more hole-shots to also win the 2013 Hole-Shot King award with 15 hole-shots out of 18 motos for the season.

The duo, riding their new factory Piranha P190R-4V pit bikes had made history as the only father/son team to win State Championship titles in the same year since the beginning of the Sho-Me State Pit Bike Series in 2008.

Round 8 – 2013 Sho-Me State Pitbike Series – Riverbottom MX

031October 22, 2013 – St. Louis, MO:

The Sho-Me State Pit Bike Series moved to Riverbottom MX at Crybaby Campground in Osage Beach, MO. for Round 8 racing.

With 3 team riders out for the season, it would be up to Pit Bike Junkie co-founders, “Fantasy” Jim & James “Professor” Smoot to bring home the gold. The father/son duo had just won the track championship titles at Midway Speedway but there were two more races to determine the State Championship titles.

Both riders were on their new factory Piranha P190R-4V pit bikes with the 4 valve Daytona motor. The Professor was in the series lead in the 12” Amateur class and would only need to complete both motos to take the championship, but just finishing was not in his vocabulary. “Let’s win this thing” he shouted as he rolled to the gate.

When the gate dropped three riders quickly left the pack behind. Jon Schneider, out of Topeka, KS., who had just picked up his Pit Bike Junkie prepared Piranha 190 the week before, took the holeshot & lead. The 50 Farm team rider Zack Martin out of the Chicago area was 2nd and the Professor was 3rd. The three battled it out for 3 laps within feet of each other while the track announcer was screaming that this was the most exciting race of the day! Suddenly, just over the finish-line jump, Schneider lost front wheel traction and nearly crashed. Martin & Smoot quickly made the pass finishing 1st & 2nd with Schneider a 3rd. In Moto 2 the Professor would get the holeshot and would lead for nearly 3 laps when Martin made the pass. The talented Martin simply out-road the Piranha 190’s raw power and finished the day with 2 moto wins for The 50 Farm crew. The two Piranha riders would end up 2nd & 3rd overall with the Professor locking in the State Championship title.

In the always entertaining Vet class, “Fantasy” Jim was one point out of 1st place, but when series leader Doug “Nick Novice” Scrounce was a no show, the “world’s oldest pit bike racer” would automatically move into the series lead by just completing the race. On the gate in moto 1 were Piranha riders “Mad” Mike Gilstrap & Walter Ray.

In a race similar to the 12” class, the 3 riders would battle it out to the last lap. “Mad” Mike would take two 1st place wins while “Fantasy” Jim would end up with 2 hole-shots and 2nd overall and Walter Ray would finish a close 3rd.

The FINAL RACE of the series is on Oct. 27th at Hwy 65mx in Sedalia, MO.

Round 6 – 2013 Sho-Me State Pitbike Series – Midway Speedway

057September 23, 2013 – St. Louis, MO:

Cool weather greeted the racers at Midway Speedway in Lebanon, MO for Round 6 of the Sho-Me State Pit Bike Series. Rain the previous 3 days had the track well watered and the Midway crew had prepped the track to perfect racing condition.

Hot off his 1st place win at the last round, Pit Bike Junkie co-founder James “Professor” Smoot (piloting the new Daytona 190) expected a tough battle with Piranha team-mate Cody Dempsey (current 12” amateur series leader). The two were separated by only 1 point.

The Professor grabbed the hole-shot in both moto’s and never looked back, leading every lap for a 1st place overall and earning the series lead. Dempsey had killed his bike at the gate on the first moto which kept him from mounting a challenge. In moto 2 Dempsey would make a valiant effort but just didn’t have the power to keep up with the pace of the Professor’s 190cc Piranha & aggressive riding. With only 3 races left either rider could take the championship for the Pit Bike Junkie/Piranha team.

In the Vet class, “Fantasy” Jim (the world’s oldest pit bike racer) debuted his new Piranha 190 and grabbed the hole-shot but the old guy couldn’t hang on to his lead and was immediately passed by new Piranha 190 rider, Mike Gilstrap and a few turns later by Doug “Nick Novice” Scrounce (series points leader). Moto 2 was a carbon copy with “Fantasy” taking the hole-shot and Gilstrap & Scrounce making the quick pass. Gilstrap’s Piranha would out-power the Kawasaki and was never challenged. Mike Gilstrap would lead every lap for a 1st place win, Scrounce would be 2nd & “Fantasy” Jim would settle for 3rd for the day.

Pit Bike Junkie/Piranha Team Results Round 6:
1st place 12” Am – James “Professor” Smoot (holeshot both motos)

Round 5 – 2013 Sho-Me State Pitbike Series – Midway Speedway

047September 10, 2013 – St. Louis, MO:

The racers were back at Midway Speedway in Lebanon, MO for Round 5 of the Sho-Me State Pitbike Series. Noticeably absent was Pit Bike Junkie pro rider Jake Payne (2013 Arenacross Champion) who was sidelined with a broken foot; we all wish him well. Also M.I.A. was Pit Bike Junkie team rider Hank Cahill (current 12” Am. series points leader), who was attending an important family function.

It would be up to team riders James “Professor” Smoot (Pit Bike Junkie co-founder) & Cody Dempsey (currently #2 in points) to defend the title in the ultra-competitive 12” Amateur class… And they did not disappoint!

The Professor (debuting the new Piranha P190R-4V) & Dempsey battled it out in Moto 1, leaving the pack behind, with Cody finishing in 1st place and the Professor in 2nd. In Moto 2, the Professor took the holeshot and led for more than 3 laps with Dempsey hot on his back wheel. Right before the white flag, Dempsey took the inside line and blew past the Professor with an aggressive block-pass. Right before the checkered flag, racing into the final turn, Dempsey’s racing line was blocked by a lap-down rider, slowing him down just enough for the Professor to slide along the inside and come neck and neck with Dempsey. As both riders came out of the corner, they wrenched open the throttle and shot up the ramp towards the finish line. Unfortunately for Dempsey, the Professor’s new bike had substantially more torque, and the lightweight machine launched itself just an inch ahead of Dempsey as they flew over the finish line… a near photo finish!!! James “Professor” Smoot succeeded in clenching first place, a perfect debut of the new Piranha P190R-4V. Cody Dempsey’s 2nd place finish was good enough to propel the talented young rider into 1st place in the Sho-Me Series’ overall standings, with Professor now a close 2nd place in points. Pit Bike Junkie team rider Hank Cahill would fall to 3rd place, with only 4 races left in the series to make up his #1 position.

In the Vet class… Pit Bike Junkie publisher ”Fantasy” Jim (current points leader & holeshot king) was 2nd into the first corner and chasing down his rival Doug “Nick Novice” Scrounce (#1 ranked Kawasaki pilot). The “world’s oldest pit bike racer” was unable to catch the “on fire” Scrounce who would go 1/1 for the day while “Fantasy” would settle for 2nd overall and pass the series #1 Vet position back to “Nick Novice”. “For safe keeping till the next race!”, proclaimed the old racer.

Round 4 – 2013 Sho-Me State Pitbike Series – Midway Speedway

045August 27, 2013 – St. Louis, MO:

The competitors in the Sho-Me State Pit Bike Series returned to their home track at Midway Speedway in Lebanon, MO for Round 4 action.

In the ultra-competitive 12” Amateur class…Team rider Hank “Hot-Shoe” Cahill (current point’s leader) battled it out with last year’s State Champion Kyle LeBeau. Cahill would be 2nd into the first turn in both motos and was hot on the back wheel of LeBeau but just couldn’t get enough speed to make the pass. Hank would end up with a 2nd overall for the day and would retain his 1st place standings as the series leader. Cahill’s Piranha teammates Cody Dempsey and James “Professor” Smoot would finish 3rd & 4th for the day.

In the Vet class…Pit Bike Junkie Publisher ”Fantasy” Jim (the world’s oldest pit bike racer) took the holeshot in moto 1 but in a repeat of last week’s race the series leader Doug “Nick Novice” Scrounce (#1 ranked Kawasaki pilot) would make the pass for a 1st place finish while “F.J.” would finish in 2nd. In Moto 2 “Fantasy” would again take the holeshot but “Nick Novice” quickly made the pass. The two on-the-gas Vets would battle it out wheel to wheel till the very last corner on the last lap when both riders unexpectedly went down! New Piranha/Daytona rider Walter Ray had been stalking the leaders and slipped by for a 1st place finish. “Fantasy” Jim was the quickest to get back on the track to beat Scrounce to the finish line. The top 3 Vets would all finish the day with 4 points each with moto 2 determining the day’s results.

Overall results were: 1st place – Walter Ray (3/1)…2nd place “Fantasy” Jim (2/2)…3rd place Doug Scrounce (1/3). With his 2nd place finish in Round 4 “Fantasy” Jim would move into the Series lead by 1 point over “Nick Novice”.

Round 3 – 2013 Sho-Me State Pitbike Series – HLR Motorsports Park

035August 20, 2013 – St. Louis, MO:

The competitors in the Sho-Me State Pit Bike Series trekked north to HLR Motorsports Park in Moberly, MO to begin the Fall half of the season with a night race. With a record 5 rain-outs this race would be only Round 3 in the 9 race schedule.

Pit Bike Junkie team rider Jake “the Assassin” Payne (2013 Arenacross Champ) pulled the holeshot in both motos in the 12” Pro class. A failed throttle cable in Moto 1 and a tight battle with Josh “the Snake” Garner (2012 State Pit Bike Champ) in Moto 2 had Payne finishing 2/1 for the overall Pro win on his Piranha/Daytona bike.

In the 12” Amateur class…Team rider Hank “Hot-Shoe” Cahill (2013 Indoor Winter Nationals Champion) schooled the pack and stretched out his 1st place lead in the series by taking 2 holeshots and back to back wins in both motos for a commanding overall 1st place for the night. Cahill’s Piranha teammates Cody Dempsey and James “Professor” Smoot would finish 3rd & 4th for the evening.

In the packed Vet class…Pit Bike Junkie Publisher ”Fantasy” Jim (the world’s oldest pit bike racer) took the Moto 1 holeshot but was quickly passed by the series leader Doug “Nick Novice” Scrounce (#1 ranked Kawasaki pilot). Scrounce would keep his lead finishing in 1st while “Fantasy” Jim would settle for 2nd. In Moto 2 the “old guy” would again take the holeshot but a hot-on-the-throttle “Nick Novice” would again make the pass at the 1st turn. The two hard-charging Vets would battle it out wheel to wheel till the very last lap when “Fantasy” made the pass at the bottom of the downhill ski jump to take the lead. Scrounce wouldn’t give up and stayed on “Fantasy’s” back wheel to the finish line. The 59 yr. old “Fantasy” Jim would go 2/1 for the overall 1st place win and would move within one point of the series leader.

Pit Bike Junkie/Piranha Team Results:

Hank “Hot-Shoe” Cahill Continues Winning Streak

Midway Speedway in Lebanon, MO was host to Round 2 of the ShoMe State Pit Bike Series. After 4 rain-outs, riders were anxious to race & compete for points toward the State Championship titles.

In the ultra-competitive 12” Am. class…Hank “Hot-Shoe” Cahill (2013 Indoor Winter Nationals Champion) took the holeshot in Moto 1 and easily disposed of the competition leading every lap for a 1st place finish. In Moto 2 Piranha team rider James “Professor” Smoot took the holeshot and had a substantial lead for 3 laps but Cahill was making up ground fast after a poor start. Unfortunately Piranha teammate Cody Dempsey (who was running 2nd) went down hard in front of Cahill and became a berm for the hard-charging #7 Piranha. Cahill would pass Smoot for the 1/1 and overall win in the class while Piranha teammates Smoot & Dempsey would finish 3rd & 4th for the day. Dempsey would take home a set of tire tracks across his back and vowed never to leave his body armor at home again.

In the always entertaining Vet class…Pit Bike Junkie Publisher ”Fantasy” Jim (the world’s oldest pit bike racer) took the Moto 1 holeshot and led every lap until Doug “Nick Novice” Scrounce (Kawasaki pilot who had been stalking the old guy) made the pass in the final corner. Jim claims a shift to neutral allowed that pass (but who really knows?). In Moto 2 it would be the “old guys” revenge as he took the holeshot & led every lap for the overall win for the day. Nick Novice missed his chance at a sweep when he took himself out with his aggressive riding style & collision with Fantasy’s rear wheel.

Pit Bike Junkie/Piranha Team Results:

1st place 12” Am – Hank “Hot-Shoe” Cahill – Holeshot Award (Moto 1)
3rd place 12” Am – James “Professor” Smoot – Holeshot Award (Moto 2)

John Huskey Edges Out “Fantasy” Jim To Take State Vet Champion Title

October 23, 2012 – St. Louis, MO: Pit Bike Junkie Team Rider John Huskey wins the State Vet Title at Riverbottom MX/Crybaby Campground in Lake of the Ozarks, MO. riding his new Piranha P150-R4V Daytona pit bike.

The big story going into the final round of the ShoMe State Pit Bike Series was in the Vet class where Pit Bike Junkie team rider John Huskey was within 3 points of series leader & 3 time State Vet Champ – “Fantasy” Jim (the world’s oldest pit bike racer).

Moto 1 saw Huskey take 2nd while “Fantasy” Jim finished 3rd. Jim would have to beat Huskey in the next moto to keep his hopes of a 4 year winning streak alive!

In Moto 2 with one final burst of determination the old guy took the holeshot but couldn’t hang on to his lead & faded quickly to mid pack. When Huskey went down hard in lap 3 ”Fantasy” Jim took advantage with a pass but there would be no Hollywood finish…The hard charging Huskey would make up ground & take the Moto 2 win for the overall & State Champion Title!!

What’s more amazing is that John missed the 1st race of the season & took the Series Title competing in just 7 of the 8 races…Now that’s some great racing!

Sikeston Race Park – Round 1 – 2012

March 31, 2012

Sikeston Race Park held Round 1 of its Mini Moto Series last Saturday night under the lights. The Pit Bike Junkie/Piranha Race Team (sponsored by OnealMX, TBparts, Pit Posse, Wholesale Cycle & SourceMX) made its first debut of the 2012 season with a new look & some new riders too.

Sikeston Race Park is the home track to the Campus Motorworks sponsored SSR Factory Vegas Team. With home track advantage the Pit Bike Junkie crew had its work cut out for them!

Kyle “the Heat” Luttrell (2011 State 12” Am Champion) stepped up to the Pro Class to give the SSR riders a run for their money. New team rider Matt “Livin’ da Dream” Walker (competing in his 1st ever pit bike race) also jumped into the Pro Class. “What’s the big deal” said Matt, “Just grab a gear, dump the clutch & let her eat”.

Riding smooth & fast and focused on precision, “the Heat” crushed the SSR riders taking a commanding lead and walking away with his very first 1st place Pro win and $125 in cash.

Walker did exactly what he said “let her eat”…with elbows, knees & feet flying everywhere, Matt just wouldn’t let off the throttle. He battled it out for 2nd until the last lap when he got together with another rider over a huge jump which threw him off the track. Walker didn’t go down but just grabbed a gear and kept going. His trip through the infield cost him some time and he finished the day with a 4th place Pro finish.

In the 12” Am class “Fantasy” Jim (the world’s oldest Pit Bike racer) took 1st place in Moto 1 with new Team rider (and 1st time pit bike racer) John Huskey a close 2nd. In Moto 2 “Fantasy” Jim took the holeshot and led the race until the last lap when a shift into neutral shot Huskey into the lead. Huskey was on fire as he hit the finish line double jump for a 1st place win in his first ever pit bike race!

In the meantime James “Professor” Smoot had been dicing it out with Huskey when an SSR rider overshot a corner and crashed into the back of the “Professor’s” bike sending the SSR rider over the bars in a spectacular endo. The “Professor” grabbed a gear and was gone!

Team riders John Huskey, “Fantasy” Jim & James “Professor” Smoot finished 1, 2 & 3 in the 12” class.

All 5 Pit Bike Junkie/Piranha Team Riders finished in the money and took home the all important bragging rights by beating the SSR Vegas Team on their home turf…but hey, it’s all about the FUN…isn’t it?
